Since 1956, the Eurovision Song Contest has provided catchy tunes, cheesy pop and bombastic anthems — but also some eye-catching fashion.

One of the most memorable competitors in Eurovision history was heavy metal band Lordi, who donned monster prosthetics and won for Finland in 2006 with "Hard Rock Hallelujah."

National rivalries behind Eurovision kitsch

Behind the kitsch and glitz of the Eurovision Song Contest, to be hosted on May 13 by Kiev, lie a host of geopolitical tensions.

Created by western public broadcasters as a catalyst to European unity in 1956, the songfest has since become an echo chamber for national rivalries.

In the latest example, Moscow and Kiev clashed this year over Russia's contest choice.

It’s euro-kitsch time again! May, besides other occasions, is the month that hosts the annual Eurovision Song Contest, which this year will be held in Vienna.
Given that last year the androgynous (and bearded transvestite) Conchita Wurst won the competition, Vienna “honoured” the occasion with … gay-themed traffic lights!

Conchita Wurst, the bearded diva who has taken the world by storm after winning last year’s Eurovision contest is the star of the new Life Ball 2015 poster.

The Life Ball, which will be held in May, is the biggest charity event in Europe supporting people with HIV/AIDS. The event’s posters, created each year by world famous artist have become legendary for their aesthetic value.
