Chania woman defrauded by fake crypto investor

A 27-year-old woman from Chania, Crete, told police she had been conned out of 150,000 euros by a man who claimed to be an investor and convinced her to invest in cryptocurrency.

The incident dates from March 2022 when the conman convinced her to pay him the sum in three instalments. By January, the victim had realised that the "investor" had disappeared with her savings.

Most Thomas Cook tourists in Greece on Zakynthos, Kos, Corfu, Skiathos and Crete, official says

About 50,000 tourists are stranded in Greece, mainly on islands, as a result of British travel firm Thomas Cook's collapse, a Greek tourism ministry official told Reuters on Monday.

The tourists, mainly British, were vacationing in the islands of Zakynthos, Kos, Corfu, Skiathos and Crete, the official said. 

Greek island of Milos voted Europe’s best by Travel + Leisure readers

The Aegean islands of Milos and Crete have been voted, respectively, first and second Best Island of Europe for 2019 by readers of the American Travel + Leisure magazine.

Paros, last year's number one pick, placed fourth, ahead of Santorini in fifth place.

"Greece rules this list with four islands," the magazine declared on its website.

Indian-Greek venture to start work on new Crete airport next year, says source

A Greek-Indian consortium has been awarded the contract to build a new airport on the island of Crete, a consortium official said on Friday.

Ariadne Airport Group, a joint venture between India's GMR Airports and Greek contractor GEK Terna, was the preferred bidder for the 850 million euro project and will begin construction at the start of next year.

Champion of Crete synagogue restoration dies, 85

Nicholas Hannan-Stavroulakis, the man who famously fought for the restoration in 1999 of the Etz Hayyim Synagogue in the town of Hania on the island of Crete, died Friday morning. He was 85.

Stavroulakis served as the director of the Jewish Museum in Athens and was an emblematic figure in Greece's Jewish community.

His funeral will held in Athens on Monday.
