Convicted N17 terrorist back in high security jail

Jailed terrorist Dimitris Koufodinas was transferred to Domokos high-security prison, near Lamia in central Greece, on Monday, following a recent tightening of the laws regarding prison leave and the transfer system.

The law, passed earlier in December, bans the transfer of detainees convicted of terrorist offenses to rural prisons and foresees much stricter criteria for furlough.

A Greek judicial council on Friday issued a third rejection of an application by convicted November 17 terrorist Dimitris Koufodinas for a seventh furlough.

The judges on the Volos-based council unanimously adopted the proposal of a prosecutor who had proposed that Koufodinas' appeal be rejected on the grounds that he has shown no remorse for his terrorist activities.

Terrorists can seek early release under contentious new penal code

Four jailed members of the now-defunct Greek terrorist group November 17, including leader Alexandros Giotopoulos, will be able to apply as of Tuesday for conditional release on the basis of a new penal code that came into effect Monday, and the group's hitman Dimitris Koufodinas will be able to do the same in September.
