Father of released soldier posts message of thanks

The father of Dimitris Kouklatzis, one of the two Greek soldiers that were released from a Turkish prison in Edirne last Tuesday, thanked God and the country's political, military and religious authorities in a long Facebook post on Saturday.

Kouklatzis and Angelos Mitretodis were arrested on March 1 after crossing the Turkish border during a routine patrol.

Two Greek soldiers freed after months in a Turkish prison returned to Greece by government jet early Wednesday after their unexpected release by a provincial court.

Defense Minister Panos Kammenos said he phoned his Turkish counterpart to express his satisfaction with the soldiers' release and invite him to visit Greece.

Greece's defense minister has extended an invitation to his Turkish counterpart following Tuesday's release of the two Greek soldiers from Turkish jail pending trial.

A statement from his office said Panos Kammenos had called Hulusi Akar on the telephone to welcome the release of the two soldiers and had and invited the Turkish minister to visit Greece.

Greek soldiers released from Turkish jail pending trial

Two Greek servicemen who had been detained in Turkey since early March for accidentally crossing the border in bad weather have been released from jail pending trial, Anadolu agency reported on Tuesday evening.

According to Anadolu, a court examined the request for their release and ruled there are no reasons to keep them behind bars.
