The world reacts with shock and condemnation following the announcement of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny's death in prison, triggering a wave of responses from global leaders.

In a bold statement following the announcement of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny's death by the Russian prison services, Latvian President Edgars Rinkevics minced no words, declaring that Navalny "was just brutally murdered by the Kremlin," as reported by AFP.

Latvian Prime Minister Krisjanis Karins said on Monday that he and his government would resign, Reuters reported.

"This Thursday I will resign myself and this cabinet to the president," Karins told a news conference in Riga.

Vilnius – Foreign Minister Anže Logar attended the Future of Democracy forum in Vilnius on Friday and held talks with his Lithuanian and Latvian counterparts dedicated to the situation on the border with Belarus.

Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias spoke with his Latvian and Polish counterparts Edgars Rinkevics and Zbigniew Rau, respectively, on Monday.

The ministers discussed developments in the eastern Mediterranean and bilateral relations. 

During a visit to Athens on Friday Latvian Foreign Minister Edgars Rinkevics and Greek leaders called for closer dialogue between the South and North of Europe to resolve cross-border issues on the basis of common values.

Romania and Latvia are full member states of the EU and NATO and work together to achieve the same fundamental liberal values inside the two bodies, Romania's Foreign Minister Teodor Melescanu told a news conference on Thursday at the end of a meeting in Bucharest with his Latvian counterpart Edgars Rinkevics.

President Klaus Iohannis welcomed visiting Latvia's Foreign Minister Edgars Rinkevics at the Cotroceni Presidential Palace on Thursday, to discuss bilateral co-operation, European and security affairs.

Russia said on Tuesday that it had the right to put weapons anywhere it chose on its own territory after reports that Moscow had deployed nuclear-capable Iskander missiles in Kaliningrad drew criticism from its neighbors and NATO, Deutsche Welle reports.
