EC to Help Bulgaria Fulfil Recommendations on Judicial Reform

The European Commission is ready to provide technical expertise to help Bulgaria reform its judicial system, the country's Justice Ministry has said.

The announcement was made after a meeting between Justice Minister Ekaterina Zaharieva and Mary McCarthy, Director in the Structural Reform Support Service (SRSS) at the European Commisssion in Sofia on Tuesday.

Bulgaria Govt Refrains from Calling for Top Judicial Body's Resignation

The cabinet of Bulgaria has refused to urge the Supreme Judicial Council (VSS), the high decisonmaking body of the judiciary, to step down, despite criticism against it in the EU Commission's report published Wednesday.

Governing parties demanded a day earlier that the VSS dissolve itself, amid a number of scandals involving its members over the past days.

Bulgaria's CVM Report to be Most Critical of Supreme Judicial Council, Prosecution

According to a draft of the Cooperation and Verification Mechanism (CVM) report, the document will be most criticial towards the Supreme Judicial Council (VSS) and the prosecutor's office.

Initial reports suggested that the European Commission will be mostly positive in its assessment of Bulgarian reforms in justice and internal affairs.

Bulgarian PM Appoints Two Deputy Justice Ministers

Bulgarian Prime Minister Boyko Borisov appointed two Deputy Justice Ministers, the press service of the government announced of Monday.

One of the deputy justice ministers is Verginiya Micheva-Ruseva, who held the same position until December 11 last year. She has more than nineteen years of work experience in the legal field.
