The new government of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) secured a vote of confidence from parliament on Dec. 19. 

With three abstaining, lawmakers voted 24-20 in favor of the coalition government made up of the National Unity Party (UBP), Democratic Party (DP), and the Rebirth Party (YDP).

A new government was formed in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus on Dec. 9. 

Ersan Saner, acting chairman of the National Unity Party (UBP), will head the new government, having formed it after an unsuccessful attempt last month, followed by another stillborn effort by Tufan Erhurman, leader of the Republican Turkish Party (CTP).

Turkish Cypriot President Ersin Tatar on Dec. 7 once again assigned the task of forming a new government to the leader of the National Unity Party (UBP). 

Tatar received UBP acting Chairman Ersan Saner at the Presidency and gave him the task after talks failed twice in recent weeks to form a government in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC).

The Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) has ruled out negotiations over the island resuming where they left off three years ago, the country's president said on Dec. 1. 

Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar said Tuesday efforts to resolve Cyprus' ethnic division should start fresh and aim to achieve a two-state deal, because decades of negotiations for a federation-based agreement have got nowhere.

In a Kathimerini interview a month after becoming the leader of the Turkish-Cypriot community, Ersin Tatar reiterated his opposition to a bizonal, bicommunal solution for Cyprus, insisting on a two-state model and calling for "a border adjustment" between the two sides.

The United Nations special envoy for Cyprus, Jane Holl Lute, arrived in Nicosia on Sunday night for a series of meetings aimed at restarting reunification talks, following the change in leadership in the Turkish-occupied north of the divided island.

The premier of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) announced on June 6 that work on the reopening of Varosha (Maraş) will gain momentum after the coronavirus pandemic is finished.

Prime Minister Ersin Tatar said in a statement there is a pause on the reopening of the abandoned town in the northern part of the divided island of Cyprus because of the deadly outbreak.

Medicines and protective medical equipment sent from Greek Cyprus to Turkish Cyprus as part of routine governmental procedures carried out within the bi-communal health committee have caused a state crisis in the north of the island.

Turkey reiterated its support for the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) during the coronavirus crisis, an official statement said on April 14. 

According to Turkey's Directorate of Communications, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan held a phone call with Ersin Tatar, prime minister of the TRNC.
