The president of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) urged the international community on June 20 to take action to change the status quo in Cyprus to guarantee the rights of the island's Turkish Cypriots.

Turkish Cypriots are in favor of "the new policy", a two-state solution, on Cyprus as decades of negotiations for a federation failed to resolve the Cyprus issue, said the president of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC).

The main opposition leader has stressed that Turkish Cyprus should be recognized as an independent and respected state in the world on a visit to the island after the election of Ersin Tatar as the president of the Turkish Cypriots.

Following a statement regarding the 1996 murder of Kutlu Adalı, a prominent Turkish Cypriot journalist, Atilla Peker has been released with a judicial control measure on the charge of "helping to premeditated murder" by an Istanbul court to which he was referred to.

Turkish Cypriot President Ersin Tatar said May 31 there was a significant increase in votes for the far-right ultra-nationalist National Popular Front (ELAM) in the latest legislative elections in the Greek Administration of Southern Cyprus (GASC). 

The leader of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) was speaking to Anadolu Agency on the results of the polls held Sunday.

The premier of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) said on May 14 that Turkish troops on the island would not withdraw and his country would not become another Gaza. 

Turkey and Turkish Cyprus have blamed Greek Cyprus for failing to introduce a new vision for ending the stalemate on the island as a result of a two-day-long U.N.-led conference in Geneva, underlining they will continue to work for a two-state solution.

Turkey's foreign minister on April 16 reaffirmed that the upcoming Geneva talks on the Cyprus issue will be an informal one.

"The meeting in Geneva will be informal. There will be no new negotiations to be held there," Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu said at a joint news conference with Ersin Tatar, president of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.

The Turkish Cypriot president on April 11 met with the U.N. special envoy on the Cyprus dispute ahead of a conference on the long-divided island later this month.

Ersin Tatar received Jane Holl Lute at the presidency.
