The unprecedented challenge that the deal between Turkey and Fayez al-Sarraj's Libyan government poses to Greece has resulted in a renewed effort to understand Turkish motivations from three different angles.

Libya's foreign minister criticised in a statement on Monday a meeting between Greek counterpart Nikos Dendias and Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar, leader of the Libyan National Army, in Benghazi, Libya, on Sunday morning.

Libya's internationally recognized government said on Dec. 19 that it has ratified a security and military cooperation deal it agreed with Turkey last month, opening the way for potential military help from Ankara.

The Government of National Accord (GNA) said in a statement that the memorandum of understanding has been ratified but did not give further details.

President Tayyip Erdogan said on Sunday Turkey is ready to provide Tripoli any military support it needs after Ankara and Libya's internationally recognized government signed a security deal. 

"We will be protecting the rights of Libya and Turkey in the Eastern Mediterranean," he said on A Haber TV. "We are more than ready to give whatever support necessary to Libya."
