Fifty suspects have been arrested across Turkey over alleged links to the network of U.S.-based Islamic preacher Fethullah Gülen, widely believed to have been behind the July 2016 coup attempt, security sources said on May 28.

The main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP) candidate in Turkey's upcoming presidential elections has threatened to shut down a key American military base by Christmas unless the United States extradites Fethullah Gülen, who is widely believed have orchestrated the coup attempt in 2016. 

Police detained on May 15 at least 19 personnel from the Turkish Naval Forces in seven provinces, including the capital Ankara, over suspected links to the network of U.S.-based Islamic preacher Fethullah Gülen.

Detention warrants were issued on May 10 for nearly 190 people over suspected links to the network of U.S.-based Islamic preacher Fethullah Gülen, referred to by the authorities as the Fetullahist Terrorist Organization (FETÖ), state-run Anadolu Agency has reported, citing a judicial source.

Turkish prosecutors have issued detention warrants for 70 soldiers allegedly linked to the network of U.S.-based Islamic preacher Fethullah Gülen, judicial sources said on May 3, state-run Anadolu Agency reported.
