Over 100 thousand have voted in centre-left elections, despite bad weather

Over 100 thousand citizens have cast their ballots in the second round for the election of the leader of the newly formed centre-left party. The two candidates that are facing off are PASOK president Fofi Gennimata and Nikos Androulakis. Fofi Gennimata voted at the election centre in the area of Kamatero, while Mr. Androulakis voted in Heraklion in Crete.

Androulakis calls for large turnout on Sunday

Nikos Androulakis, a member of the European Parliament and rival of Democratic Alignment leader Fofi Gennimata in Sunday's runoff election for a leader of the new center-left party, has called for a large voter turnout.

"I am calling on citizens to vote," he said on Tuesday, adding that the effort to reform the center-left in Greece needs a mass turnout of voters this weekend.

Gennimata heads to Sunday runoff as the hot favorite

Democratic Alignment (PASOK) chief Fofi Gennimata heads into the runoff election against Nikos Androulakis for the leadership of the new center-left party as the favorite after her emphatic victory in Sunday's first round.  

Gennimata won 42.76 percent of the vote, 17 points ahead of Androulakis - a member of the European Parliament and a former PASOK party secretary.

PASOK leader Fofi Gennimata secured a clear advantage at the first round of elections for a leader to the new center-left party on Sunday, but will have to contest a runoff with runner-up Nikos Androulakis a week later, while voter turnout exceeded expectations.

With 175,000 votes counted (83.2 percent) in the elections for the president of the centre-left political formation, Fofi Gennimata, leader of the socialist party of PASOK has secured a spot in the second round after receiving 42.50 of the votes and will face off for the leadership of the new centre-left formation with Nikos Anfroulakis. A total of 210,264 citizens voted.

Center-left candidates brace for Sunday's leadership vote

Campaigning by candidates for the leadership of the new center-left party officially ends on Friday night, two days before elections take place on Sunday, with speeches by the leader of To Potami Stavros Theodorakis at Zappeion Hall in Athens and PASOK MEP Nikos Androulakis at the Vellidio Conference Hall in Thessaloniki.
