Cuba's ruling Communist Party elected President Miguel Diaz-Canel to succeed Raul Castro as party first secretary, the most powerful position in the country, on the final day of its congress on Monday, Reuters reported.

Turkey's main opposition party to attend Castro's funeral

A delegation from Turkey's main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP) will travel to Cuba to attend the funeral of Cuba's iconic late leader Fidel Castro on Dec. 4. 

The will be headed by CHP Deputy Chair Veli Ağbaba, Istanbul deputy Sezgin Tanrıkulu and Kocaeli deputy Tahsin Tarhan, the party announced on Nov. 29.

Fidel Castro, Cuba’s former president and leader of the communist revolution died at the age 90. “The commander in chief of the Cuban revolution died at 22:29 hours this evening (03:29 GMT Saturday),” President of Cuba and brother of Fidel, Raul Castro said. Fidel Castro had ruled Cuba in a one part system for 50 years until 2008, when his brother Raul took over.
