Billionaire George Soros has transferred $18 billion to his Open Society Foundations, the primary vehicle for his global political activism and philanthropy.

Billionaire investor George Soros has given away nearly $18 billion to his Open Society Foundations, transforming it into the "second largest" charity in the US after the Bill and Melinda Gates' Foundation.

The famous Hungarian-American investor and business magnate, George Soros, donated much of his wealth to his foundation, founded in 1984 to support democracy, human rights and freedom of the press, reports BNT. 

Open Society received USD 18 billion from 87-year-old Soros, a big donor to the Democratic Party in the United States, a spokeswoman for the Foundation told AFP.

Illegal immigration into Hungary has been cut by over 99% after the country built a series of border fences in response to the European migrant crisis.

Prime Minister Viktor Orbán’s Chief Security Advisor, György Bakondi has announced that the border fences have cut the number of illegal immigrants entering the country from 391,000 in 2015, to 1,184 in 2017.

 Hungary has sent its response to the European Commission regarding the infringement procedures launched because of Hungary's laws on NGOs financed from abroad and on foreign universities, a justice ministry official said on Monday.

Hungary's data protection watchdog on Monday lashed government plans to centralise personal data and ease rules on allowing official access, calling them a major threat to citizens' rights.

The European Union issued a one-month ultimatum to Hungary on Thursday to address its concerns over an education law it says runs counter to the bloc’s values or face possible sanctions in court.

The European Commission today launched the second step of a procedure against Hungary related to the local law on higher education, BNT reported.

The law violates EU law and international law, and Hungary has one month to accept the necessary amendments, a commission statement said.
