Minister says safety plan for the return of tourists will be ‘realistic’

Greece's plan to reopen its battered tourism sector this summer will ensure that tourists remain safe but will also be subject to change, depending on developments with the coronavirus pandemic, the country's Tourism Minister Haris Theoharis told German newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung.

Greece aims to welcome tourists in July, says minister

Greece's tourism sector hopes to be "open for business" sometime in July, Tourism Minister Haris Theoharis said in an interview with BBC on Thursday.

Asked how soon Greek borders may reopen, Theoharis said that this issue will be discussed with health experts but the country hopes to "salvage" most of the summer season.

Some 50,000 holidaymakers stranded in Greece due to the collapse of the Thomas Cook tour operator are to be repatriated in the coming days, Greek Tourism Minister Haris Theoharis told Skai television on Monday. 

The first 22,000 are to be repatriated over the next three days, the minister said, adding that aircraft were to arrive on Monday at Zakynthos, Kos and Corfu. 

Theoharis: 50,000 holidaymakers stranded in Greece to be repatriated in coming days

Former deputy minister named head of tourism organization

Former culture and tourism official Angela Gerekou has been appointed to head the Greek National Tourism Organization (GNTO), Minister Haris Theoharis announced on Thursday.

Her "experience and knowledge on tourism-related issues will contribute to shaping a modern GNTO, adapted to current conditions," Theoharis said.
