Jesus Christ

It Is Holy Saturday Today

It is Holy Saturday today, the last day of the Holy week before Resurrection Sunday. Holy Saturday, also known as the Easter Eve commemorates the day that Jesus Christ's body lay in the tomb.

On this day the Holy Fire descends from the skies above the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem into the hands of the Patriarch of Jerusalem.

Today is Good Friday

Christians around the world celebrate Good Friday, when, according to belief, Jesus Christ died crucified on the cross. It is a non-working day of strict fasting and contemplation.

"Good Friday is a joyful sorrow. It is not desperation, it is not grief for the late Jesus", said professor Ljubomir Stojanovic from the Faculty of Theology in Belgrade.

Christians in Slovenia starting Easter celebrations

The preparations throughout Lent, which started on Ash Wednesday, will culminate in the Easter Triduum, starting with liturgical celebrations of Maundy Thursday.

While Easter, the celebration of Jesus Christ's resurrection, is the centrepiece of Christianity, the practices surrounding it in different denominations as well as countries around the world differ.

Archaeologists in Israel say Jesus was a common name in the Holy Land 2,000 years ago, and that they have found about 30 ancient burial boxes inscribed with it.
