North Korea has announced it will not take part in the Tokyo Olympics this year, saying the decision is to protect its athletes from Covid-19.

The decision puts an end to South Korea's hopes of using the Games to engage with the North amid stalled cross-border talks.

 In 2018, both sides entered a joint team at the Winter Olympics which led to a series of historic summits.

President Moon Jae-in has vehemently lobbied to organize three Trump summits with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, but that diplomacy is blocked due to disagreements over the easing of US sanctions related to the disarmament of North Korea.

US President Donald Trump has offered North Korean leader Kim Jong-un help in combating the coronavirus, world agencies have reported.

In a letter, Trump has indicated his intention to offer co-operation, saying he was impressed with Kim's efforts to protect his people from the serious threat of the epidemic, according to North Korean news agency KCTA, quoted by Reuters.

North Korea announced today that the US has proposed blocked talks on denuclearization to be resumed in December as North Korean leader Kim Jong-un's deadline for US President Donald Trump's government to propose a mutually acceptable deal to save talks is approaching. BGNES reported.

North Korea hailed the latest weapons tests as successful and said the launch proved the "perfection" of a system designed to "completely destroy" super-enemy targets, the DPA reported, citing North Korean state media.

North Korea says negotiations with the US in Stockholm have failed. According to the country's chief negotiator, Washington has presented "nothing to the negotiating table," AFP reports.

The first lady of the United States, Melania Trump, hasn't had any secret meetings with the North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, the Associated Press reported. The White House made a statement on the matter after a press conference in France, where it attended a G7 meeting, President Donald Trump said the first lady "met" Kim and believes his country "has tremendous potential."

The United States is ready to resume direct business discussions with North Korea over its nuclear program, said North Korea's special envoy for the DPRK, Stephen Biegun, in Seoul, reported BTA. 
Bilateral talks have stalled since the failure of the second Hanoi summit in February between US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.
