Mitsotakis nominates Council of State chief to serve as first woman President

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has nominated Ekaterini Sakellaropoulou, the first woman chief justice of the Council of State, to be the first woman president of the Hellenic Republic.

The surprise nomination was announced by the PM in a nationally televised address on the evening of 15 January.

Head of Greece's top administrative court nominated for next president

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis nominated Katerina Sakellaropoulou, a female top judge, for the country's next president, in a televised address on the state-run broadcaster ERT on Wednesday evening.
Sakellaropoulou is the current president of the Council of State, the country's top administrative court.

PM proposes head of Greece's top administrative court for next president

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis announced that he is proposing the head of the Council of State, Katerina Sakellaropoulou, as a nominee for the country's next president, in a televised address on the state-run broadcaster ERT on Wednesday evening.

If her candidacy is approved by Parliament, she will replace incumbent Prokopis Pavlopoulos, whose term expires in March.

Prior to the 1976 US presidential election excessive expectations were cultivated among Greeks regarding the expected election of Jimmy Carter.

The candidate was depicted as a philhellene and much was invested in his electoral victory.

Pyatt briefs SYRIZA cadres on outcome of Mitsotakis visit to US

In a note on Twitter on Tuesday, US Ambassador Geoffrey Pyatt stressed the importance of boosting Greek-US ties and "continuing to build on our strong bilateral relationship, including on defense, security, energy and investment" following talks with prominent SYRIZA cadres Nikos Pappas and Giorgos Katrougalos.
