The Hungarian Democratic Union of Romania (UDMR) was established on December 25, 1989, being registered with the Bucharest District 1 Courthouse on January 28, 1990, according to 'Political Parties' released by the AGERPRES National News Agency in 1993.

The year 1989 meant the end of the communist regime in the Central and Eastern European countries. Romania was the only ex-communist country in the case of which the switch to democracy was violent, involving protests and street fights, and the only country where the leaders of the former regime got executed.

Anti-Communist dissident Cornea laid to rest in Cluj-Napoca in military funeral

Hundreds of people attended the military funeral in Cluj-Napoca on Monday of well-known anti-Communist dissident Doina Cornea, in the foyer of the University House near the headquarters of the Babes-Bolyai University, where she used to teach years ago.

More than 400 people, including former Romanian President Emil Constantinescu and poet Ana Blandiana, attended the event.

PSD's Cretu hails court's decision in Tokes case

Vice-President of the Social Democratic Party (PSD) Corina Cretu is hailing the decision of the Bucharest Court of Appeal to overrule a court action initiated by Laszlo Tokes challenging the decision of the Honour Council of Romania's Star national order to strip Tokes of the order, saying that the decision is moral as well as perfectly legal.
