"Minions: The Rise of Gru," the latest installment in the animated "Despicable Me" franchise, crushed the competition at the North American box office in its opening weekend, with an expected $127.9 million take over the four-day July 4th holiday.

Oscar-winning deaf actor Marlee Matlin, who appeared in this year's Best Picture winner "CODA," has been elected to the Academy's board of governors, the organization said on June 23.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the body that awards the annual Oscars, said Matlin was part of a new slate of governors who will take office for the 2022-23 season.

"Jurassic World Dominion" again stomped to the top on North American movie screens this weekend, while new release "Lightyear" didn't quite make it to infinity, or beyond.

South Korean film "Parasite" has been named best picture at this year's Oscars, becoming the first non-English language film to take the top prize. Parasite won four awards in total: as the best international film, for best director, and the best original screenplay award.

The 92nd Oscar nominations were announced this morning.

Television's glittering Emmys placed politics front and center on Sept. 17, lavishing "The Handmaid's Tale" with awards for its bleak portrait of an authoritarian America.

The glitzy ceremony in downtown Los Angeles was widely expected to have a strongly political flavor, and host Stephen Colbert set the tone in his opening monologue.

The 43rd edition of France's Deauville American Film Festival opened late on Sept. 1 in the Normandy seaside resort with a tribute to American actress Laura Dern.

The festival, a showcase for American cinema, will run for ten days and offer 14 films in the official competition. Dern appeared on the red carpet in a dress covered in blue and white feathers.

This year the annual !f Istanbul Independent Film Festival will open with the theme "Things that heal us." The festival will offer ways of healing and sense-making amid challenges in Turkey and much of the world, inviting viewers to come together, through its films, musical events and public talks.

Two acclaimed Turkish directors will feature at the 71st Venice Film Festival, from Aug. 27 to Sept. 6.

At a press conference on July 24, festival organizers announced a 20-strong competition lineup, which will include “The Cut” by Turkish-German director Fatih Akın, starring Tahar Rahim, and “Sivas” by Turkish director Kaan Müjdeci.
