Perhaps the "how" now matters more than the "what." After all, we have all repeatedly watched the video. A fuming Lefteris Avgenakis moves against the airport employee and, with violent, aggressive gestures, snatches the phone from his hands to prove something amid their dispute over the politician's boarding.

Why shouldn't a minister who blackmails people whose homes and businesses have been destroyed by floods, saying that they won't get any compensation unless they vote "correctly" in the local elections (as Lefteris Avgenakis did in Thessaly in the fall of 2023), go on to physically bully an employee who won't let him break the rules (as he did last week at Athens Airport)?

The dialogue that took place between Lefteris Avgenakis, a minister until recently and a long-serving MP, and the employee of an airline company at Athens International Airport matters, chiefly as a piece of evidence, as the case takes the legal and judicial route.

A day after conservative MP Lefteris Avgenakis was officially expelled from the New Democracy parliamentary group following footage showing him assaulting an airport employee, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis criticized manifestations of arrogance among the political class for undermining public trust in the political system.

Mr. Avgenakis was the first secretary of Mr. Mitsotakis since he took over the reins of ND in 2016, while for 5 consecutive years, until the recent reshuffle, he held ministerial positions.

MP Lefteris Avgenakis has been officially expelled from the New Democracy parliamentary group after footage emerged on Wednesday showing him assaulting an airport employee. 

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis referred him to the party's ethics committee, which decided to have him expelled.

Athens Prosecutor Antonis Eleftherianos has ordered a preliminary investigation into former minister and New Democracy MP Lefteris Avgenakis after footage emerged showing him assaulting an airport employee.
