Serbian parliament rejects proposal for inquiry committee on wiretapping

Serbia's MPs refused the proposal of the opposition to put on the agenda the decision to set up an inquiry committee on the wiretapping scandal.

After the website Teleprompter published what appears to be a transcribed conversation of Bojan Pajtic, leader of the opposition Democratic Party, on Friday he urged parliament to investigate who was behind the wiretapping.

Serbian Interior Minister Nebojsa Stefanovic and Aleksandar Djordjevic, head of the Serbian Security Agency, BIA, denied on Wednesday any involvement in unlawful wiretapping, following claims by opposition leader Bojan Pajtic that his telephone calls had been intercepted.

Stefanovic said he was ready to resign if there is evidence that police had wiretapped the opposition leader.

The U.S. embassy in Belgrade has stated that Ambassador Michael Kirby had not said what is attributed to him in a transcript published online.

The transcript in question is of a phone conversation between Bojan Pajtic and Lidija Udovicki.

The interior minister said on Wednesday that the publication of transcripts of conversations between the two on the Teleprompter website was "a fabricated story" and part of a plan to bring down Prime Minister Aleksandar Vucic.

Continental Wind Partners (CWP) on Monday rejected claims that it was behind a letter criticising Vucic written by five US Congress members who alleged that the Serbian premier was linked to strategic company takeovers and deteriorating media freedom.
