The U.S. and China signed a "phase one" trade deal on Jan. 15 that marks a major milestone in the more than two-year trade war between the world's top two economies.

The Chinese delegation, headed by Deputy Prime Minister Liu He, will leave for Washington on January 13 to sign the first part of a trade deal between the two countries, according to South China Morning Post newspaper, citing its own sources.

However, negotiations between the countries are still going on to prevent the deepening trade war between the world's two largest economies.

President Trump announced Sunday that the US and China had made "substantial progress" in their trade talks and that he was postponing raising tariffs on Chinese goods while a deal is finalized, FORBES writes. 

U.S. President Donald Trump said on Thursday he did not plan to meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping before a March 1 deadline set by the two countries to achieve a trade deal, Reuters writes.

Asked during an event in the Oval Office whether there would be a meeting before the deadline, Trump said: "No."

China's top trade negotiator arrived in Washington as the world's top two economies prepare for high-stakes trade talks, Chinese state media said Tuesday, reports AFP. 

Chinese President Xi Jinping’s top economic adviser, Liu He, are set to visit the United States this week, China’s Foreign Ministry said on Feb. 26, at a time of tension between the two countries over trade.
