Romania's main opposition centre-right National Liberal Party, PNL, is set to elect a new leader on Saturday, as the ruling Social Democrats face their worst crisis in years, with the party leader entrenched in a power struggle with the Prime Minister.

Investigations by the National Anti-Corruption Directorate, the DNA, have not stopped many Romanian politicians from campaigning for office in the June elections.

National Liberal Party (PNL) Deputies' leader Ludovic Orban on Friday said that there is "no connection whatsoever" between the Liberals filing the censure motion and "what happens in the DNA [the National Anti-corruption Directorate] activity."

The Liberals have filed a motion to censure the Ponta Government on Friday, with the office of the Chamber of Deputies Speaker, Valeriu Zgonea, as well as with the office of the Senate Speaker, Calin Popescu-Tariceanu.

The Prime minister's Control Body will notify the National Anticorruption Directorate (DNA) for the violation of some legal provisions in connection with the modernisation of the Transalpina national road during the tenures of former liberal ministers Ludovic Orban and Varujan Vosganian.

The opposition National Liberal Party (PDL) and Democratic Liberal Party (PDL) groups in the Senate have merged, an announcement to this effect having been made when the group leaders presented the group leadership for the new ordinary session of the legislature at the plenary sitting of the upper house on Monday, in line with the Rules.

Chairwoman of the National Liberal Party (PNL, currently the largest party in opposition) Alina Gorghiu on Friday stated that her plan is to continue the project initiated by the former leader of the party, President-elect Klaus Iohannis, to change the way politics is done in Romania.

The National Liberal Party, PNL, Romania's biggest opposition party, elected Alina Gorghiu as its new leader on Thursday, replacing Klaus Iohannis, who resigned as head of the PNL to become President of Romania.

She won 48 votes in an internal meeting of party leaders. Her main opponent, a former Transport Minister, Ludovic Orban, got 28 votes.

Alina Gorghiu was elected on December 18, 2014 as chairperson of the old National Liberal Party (PNL), the position implying the co-chair status in the new PNL.

First deputy-chairperson of the National Liberal Party (PNL), Alina Gorghiu has been elected on Thursday as president of the old PNL, and she will also be co-chairperson of the new PNL.
