Petra Kvitova compared the atmosphere created by Greek Maria Sakkari's supporters on Rod Laver Arena to "a soccer match" but cut through the noise and battled back from a set down to reach the Australian Open quarter-finals on Sunday.

Two-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka began her 2020 season with a 6-2 6-7(4) 6-3 victory over Maria Sakkari in the opening round of the Brisbane International on Tuesday.

For the first time in history, Greek tennis has celebrated a twin triumph in the same weekend, as Maria Sakkari won the Rabat Grand Prix in Morocco on Saturday and a day later Stefanos Tsitsipas landed the Estoril Open trophy in Portugal.

Roger Federer relied on his trusted serve to beat Stefanos Tsitsipas 7-6 (5), 7-6 (4) Thursday and give defending champion Switzerland a spot in the Hopman Cup final.

Unbeaten Switzerland assured its place in Saturday's final ahead of the women's singles match between Belinda Bencic and Greek opponent Maria Sakkari.

Greece defeated the US 2-1 in its second round-robin match at the Hopman Cup in Perth on Monday, as Maria Sakkari and Stefanos Tsitsipas overcame the resistance of a Serena Williams-powered US doubles team for the first Greek victory in the tournament.

Cameron Norrie and Katie Boulter beat Stefanos Tsitsipas and Maria Sakkari 4-3, 3-4, 4-3, including 5-4 in a tiebreaker in the deciding mixed doubles set in the Fast4 format, to give Britain a 2-1 win over Greece in the opening match of the eight-team Hopman Cup tennis tournament on Saturday.

After an outstanding performance in her first WTA final, unseeded Maria Sakkari of Greece was defeated by Romania's Mihaela Buzarnescu at the Silicon Valley Classic on Monday.
