EU chief Brexit negotiator Michel Barnier said it was still possible to reach an agreement with Britain this week, but the British government has to come up with a legally binding text, the Associated Press reported.

The 27 Member States have given the green light to accelerated negotiations with UK, AFP reported. This happened during a meeting between EU chief negotiator Michel Barnier and the Permanent Representatives of the 27 in the EU.

MEPs "are not impressed" by the proposed new withdrawal agreement by British Prime Minister Boris Johnson. Guy Verhofstadt, the EU Parliament's Brexit co-ordinator, said he was "absolutely not positive about Johnson's proposals".

Jean-Claude Juncker, the president of the European Commission, said he and the European Union's chief Brexit negotiator Michel Barnier were doing all they could to get a Brexit deal, and if they failed it would be Britain's responsibility.
