School closures might be extended after Easter holidays

Education Minister Niki Kerameus Thursday left open the possibility of schools - which were closed on March 10 to curb the spread of the coronavirus - reopening in mid-May rather than immediately after the Easter holidays as many had hoped, though questions remained about how this would affect the timing of university entrance exams for senior high students. 

Easter church services to be held behind closed doors

Following a session by teleconference on Wednesday, the Holy Synod of the Church of Greece said that Easter services will be held behind closed doors without a congregation as of Palm Sunday on April 12, with the minimum number of clergy and chanters present. Archbishop Ieronymos said that these services must be broadcast live on TV, radio and the internet.

Greece to use state TV to teach school children

Following the closure of all educational institutions earlier this month as part of a broader drive to curb the spread of the coronavirus, the Education Ministry is planning to offer educational television programs for primary school children via state broadcaster ERT and something similar for older pupils to supplement online classes. 

Greek Church leader requests exemption to coronavirus curfew

Greek Archbishop Ieronymos requested an exemption from coronavirus curfew measures in a letter to the Education and Religion Minister Niki Kerameus on Thursday, asking to carry on liturgies on a normal schedule, behind closed doors.

The request comes as a joint ministerial decision suspending all religious services expires on March 30.
