Greek art flying off the block

The painting is a feast of colors and allegories - the body of the Homeric hero shines under the light as he places three flowers on his bird cage-for-a-head. The ancient philosopher, dressed in a green tunic, is carrying three fish in his hand. Between the two stands another faceless figurine: a woman dressed in Belle Epoque-style garb holding a clock.

Nikos Nikolaou | Thessaloniki | To October 27

The MIET Bookshop in Thessaloniki is hosting an exhibition of works by Greek artist Nikos Nikolaou. The exhibition is divided into two parts. The first features works connected to theater, including costume and set designs while the second is dedicated to his murals. Nikos Nikolaou was born on the island of Hydra in 1909.

Engonopoulos's thoughts and art exposed in Andros show

When Nikos Engonopoulos (1907-85) first presented a collection of poems in the late 1930s, he was accused of being insane. The initial reactions to his work as a painter were not much more flattering either. Yet the artist did not waver under such criticism, pursuing his creative bent without need for praise.

Summer with Engonopoulos, Lappas and nudes

There's an interesting lineup of art exhibitions scheduled around Greece this summer, and then of course there's documenta, which as well as its home city Kassel in Germany is also taking place at locations in Athens until mid-July. On the islands, several tributes have already launched, focusing mainly on painting and honoring the Greek sculptor George Lappas, who died last year.
