New York auction could smash art world record

Christie's auction house is hoping to set new world records with a Picasso valued at $140 million and a Giacometti worth $130 million, as New York's spring auction season kicks off May 5.

Pablo Picasso's colorful "The Women of Algiers (Version 0)," depicting a scene from a harem, will be up for grabs when Christie's puts it on the auction block May 11.

Romania Names New Finance Minister

President Klaus Iohannis on Monday is to approve the nomination of Eugen Teodorovici for the post of Finance Minister.

Teodorovici, 43, is an MP who has been Minister of European Funds since 2012 when Ponta set up the ministry.

He is to become the sixth finance minister since Ponta took office in May 2012. The premier has jokingly referred to the position as a "kamikaze" role.

Ex FinMin Darius Valcov's paintings to undergo expert assessment, might next go on display

The National Anticorruption Directorate (DNA) confirmed having identified 101 paintings former Finance Minister Darius Valcov had acquired via go-betweens; the works of art will undergo expert assessment and will be further placed in the custody of a specialist institution that will be able to put them on display.

Five Monet paintings sell for $84 million in London

Five paintings by French impressionist Claude Monet, including his famous 1908 "Le Grand Canal" view of Venice, sold for a total of $84 million (73 million euros) in a London auction on Feb. 3.
      
"Le Grand Canal", a hazy blue-and-green view of the banks of the Italian city painted at the peak of Monet's career, sold for $35.6 million (31.4 million euros).
