Pavlos Samios

Pavlos Samios, who passed away so unexpectedly at the age of 73 earlier this month, was a man full of life. A man who was humble and kind. He never enjoyed talking about himself. He never had to. His career, his work, and most importantly his spirit, were testament enough.

For its Christmas group exhibition titled "Magical Strokes," the Skoufa Gallery presents selected pieces by 35 artists exploring childhood memories, Greek folk traditions and other nostalgic themes evoked by the holiday season. The impressive roster of participating artists comprises Jeff Koons, Patrick Rubinstein, Nikos Angelidis, Stathis Alexopoulos, Eva Anagnostou, Kalliopi Asargiotaki, Yior

Odysseas Elytis, Giorgos Seferis and scores of other writers have waxed poetic about Santorini's natural attractions, just as dozens of visual artists have been unable to resist the island's stunning landscapes.

In "Broken History," on show at the Byzantine and Christian Museum, painter and Athens School of Fine Arts professor Pavlos Samios explores how time affects history in a series of works on cardboard that juxtapose ancient art with street art, the past and the present. The show will open at 7 p.m. on Friday, March 15. Visiting hours are Wednesdays to Mondays from 8.30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Renowned artist Pavlos Samios will present his ideas on how the Parthenon Marbles were painted by the ancients in a lecture titled "Re-envisioned: The Color and Design of the Parthenon Frieze." Hosted by the College Year in Athens at 7.30 p.m.

The return of the Parthenon Marbles is an issue of international debate. Nevertheless, the sculptures themselves are always a source of pride and aesthetic enjoyment, not to mention research.

The reunification of the Parthenon Marbles with the monuments from which they were forcibly detached in the 19th century is something on which almost all Greeks agree.

A verse from Giorgos Seferis's poem "Thrush" - "...the statues are no longer fragments. We are" - perfectly captures the essence of "Broken History," a new collection of works by artist Pavlos Samios that recently went on show at the Greek capital's Byzantine and Christian Museum.

Twelve artists representing the so-called 80s Generation of Greek art - Nikos Angelidis, Dafni Angelidou, Chryssa Verghi, Stefanos Daskalakis, Irene Iliopoulou, Irene Kana, Dimitris Koukos, Vangelis Rinas, Pavlos Samios, Anna Maria Tsakali, Maria Filopoulou and Manolis Charos - are the subject of a group show at the Nitra Gallery, running through February 15.

Acclaimed Greek artist Pavlos Samios presents a series of paintings he did in 1992 while in Paris, in which he explored the then-novel trend of ecology and eco-friendly living.
