Tennis: Irina Begu qualifies for Wimbledon second round
Romanian tennis player Irina Begu qualified for the second round of the Wimbledon tour, the third Grand Slam of the year, after defeating Katie Volynets (USA) by 6-4, 7-5, on Monday, in London. Begu (30 years old, #79 WTA) obtained victory after one hour and 38 minutes. The Romanian was led in the first set by 3-1 and 4-2, but managed to return and to win by 6-4, after four consecutive games.

Not less than four Romanian tennis players are among the seeded players at the BRD Bucharest Open (WTA) tournament, equipped with total prizes worth 226,750 US dollars, to start on Monday on the BNR Arenas in the Capital City: Mihaela Buzarnescu is 2nd seeded, Irina Begu, last edition's winner, is 3rd seeded, Sorana Cirstea is seed no. 5 and Ana Bogdan is seed no. 6.

World No. 1 Simona Halep punched her ticket to the Indian Wells semi-finals with a 6-4, 6-7 (5/7), 6-3 win over Croatia’s Petra Martic on March 14.

Ivanovic goes through to 2nd round of Roland Garros
PARIS - Serbia's Ana Ivanovic defeated France's Caroline Garcia 6-1 6-3 on Tuesday to reach the 2nd round of Roland Garros.
Ivanovic dominated the match from the very start, denying Garcia any chance of a comeback.
She will next face Ukraine's Elina Svitolina, who got into the 2nd round after Petra Martic of Croatia retired from their match.
