Socialist-Backed Candidate Wins First Round of Bulgaria's Presidential Election

The candidate backed by Bulgaria's biggest opposition force is widening his lead on Tsetska Tsacheva, the contender of the main ruling party, the final count shows.

With 100% of ballot protocols processed, Rumen Radev's support is estimated at 25.43%, while Tsacheva has earned 21.96% of the vote, the Central Election Commission (CEC) says [BG].

Rumen Radev, the socialist-backed candidate, is on the lead in the first round of Bulgaria's presidential elections, exit poll data shows.

Gallup Internatioinal has projected 24.9% support for Radev, while the candidate of the main ruling GERB party, Tsetska Tsacheva, has ranked second, having mustered 22%.

Bulgarian Prime Minister Plamen Oresharski has said it was he who asked the Movement for Rights and Freedoms (DPS) party to endorse him.

Oresharski, whose tenure is associated with nationwide protests and the collapse of Bulgaria's fourth-largest lender, is running has an independent in the November 06 presidential elections.

"Plamen Oresharski is not DPS' real candidate but merely a step in the political kazachok in the direction of Rumen Radev. Unless a different deal is reached. Because the purpose of the colleagues from DPS is to find a way to power. There is no way for them through the right-wing," stated Dost's leader Lutvi Mestan on Nova TV.
