A special parliamentary body will hear on Thursday and Friday from 11 candidates vying for the positions of the president and top prosecutor of Greece's Supreme Court.

The Greek Foreign Ministry and President Prokopis Pavlopoulos on Sunday expressed their shock and condemnation over the deadly mass shootings in two US cities over the weekend, which claimed the lives of at least 29 people and injured dozens.

Washington recognizes Greece's strategic value and reliability as an ally, attributes that only grow stronger as doubts deepen over Turkey's stance, American Jewish Committee (AJC) CEO David Harris tells Kathimerini in an interview.

Greek President Prokopis Pavlopoulos has refused to sign two presidential decrees for the appointment of a new prosecutor and president of the Supreme Court that had been selected by the previous SYRIZA administration.
The decrees, which were returned to the newly elected New Democracy government unsigned, are considered null and void, and not binding, as a result.

Greek President Prokopis Pavlopoulos has expressed his grief and condolences over the loss of life in a violent storm in the country's northern Halkidiki peninsula on Wednesday night.
"I express my grief over the victims of the disastrous storm in Halkidiki and I extend my sincere condolences as well as my full support to the families and their relatives," Pavlopoulos said.

American Jewish Committee (AJC) CEO David Harris was honored on Tuesday by Greece with one of the country's most prestigious awards, the Order of the Phoenix, for his critical contribution to strengthening relations among Greece, Cyprus, Israel and the US.

Prime Minister-elect Kyriakos Mitsotakis said New Democracy's sweeping victory in Sunday's general election had significance for Europe as well as Greece, pointing to the defeat of neo-Nazi Golden Dawn which crashed out of Parliament.

New Democracy has garnered a solid parliamentary majority according to exit polls that give Greece's conservative party a landslide 12 percentage point lead over left-wing SYRIZA.

New Democracy leader Kyriakos Mitsotakis is scheduled to be sworn in as Prime Minister by President Prokopis Pavlopoulos at the Presidential Mansion at 1pm tomorrow, 8 July.

Greeks began voting for a new government on Sunday, after Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras called for a snap poll following a big defeat at the European and local elections in June.
