Salzburg Festival sold out while others struggle to regain audience

People fill the cobblestone streets of the city where Mozart was born, rushing to 213 performances over six weeks. While many classical music institutions struggle to regain audience, the Salzburg Festival is on track to draw people from over 75 nations to opera, concerts and drama.

Istanbul State Symphony Orchestra at AKM tonight

The second concert of the Istanbul State Symphony Orchestra (IDSO) Denizbank Concert will take place tonight at Atatürk Cultural Center. South Korean violinist Soyoung Yoon will perform works by Richard Wagner and Richard Strauss, as well as the violin concerto of Jean Sibelius, the founder of Finnish symphonic music at the concert, to be conducted by Rengim Gökmen.

Tartini Festival gets under way in coastal town Piran

Piran – The 21st Tartini Festival will start in the seaside town of Piran tonight with a concert by I Solisti Veneti at Minorite Monastery dedicated to the 330th birth anniversary of the Piran-born composer Giuseppe Tartini (1692-1770). Another highlight will be a performance by Italian violinist Fabio Biondi on Wednesday.

The Thessaloniki State Symphony Orchestra performs a tribute to Richard Strauss (1864-1949) with a concert of the German composer's Serenade for 13 Winds, Duet-Concertino for clarinet and bassoon, Metamorphosen, Study for 23 Solo Strings and Till Eulenspiegel's Merry Pranks. The ensemble is conducted by Dimitris Botinis, with Spyros Mourikis on clarinet and Alexandros Oikonomou on bassoon.

Festival of the Aegean turns 15, celebrating with 17 concerts

Syros' historic Apollo Theater welcomes the International Festival of the Aegean for the annual event's 15th outing. Established in 2005 to bring together local and international choirs, classical symphony orchestras and opera singers, Peter Tiboris' heralded festival runs from July 14 to 26.

The Greek National Opera formally inaugurates its new home at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center (SNFCC) with Richard Strauss's "Elektra," directed by Yiannis Kokkos and conducted by Vassilis Christopoulos, with Sabine Hogrefe in the title role, Agnes Baltsa as Clytemnestra, Gun-Brit Barkmin as Chrysothemis, Frank van Aken as Aegisthus and Dimitris Tiliakos as Orestis.

The Athens Concert Hall is hosting the Athens State Orchestra in works by Petros Petridis, Claude Debussy and Richard Strauss on Friday, May 6. The performance is part of the ensemble's "On the Threshold of the 20th Century" series. German cellist Gabriel Schwabe, viola soloist Paris Anastasiadis and the ERT Choir will be joining the orchestra on stage.

The Athens Concert Hall will screen a recorded broadcast of Richard Strauss's "Elektra" from the Metropolitan Opera in New York on Saturday, May 7. The opera is directed by French director Patrice Chereau and features Nina Stemme as Elektra, Waltraud Meier as Clytemnestra, Adrianne Pieczonka as Chrysothemis, Burkhard Ulrich as Aegisthus and Eric Owens as Orestes.
