The head of the Venice Film Festival, which started yesterday, told AFP it was "absolutely incomprehensible" why U.S. opinion had turned so strongly against director Woody Allen.

The festival has been criticized for its inclusion of several directors with past sexual assault allegations in this year's line-up, including Allen, Roman Polanski and Luc Besson.

Protests were building on social media and from French filmmakers on May 16 ahead of Johnny Depp's red carpet appearance for the opening of the Cannes Film Festival.

Depp is making his movie comeback at the French Riviera festival with his new film "Jeanne du Barry," in which he plays French King Louis XV.

Movie stars and other film industry workers convicted of or facing possible prison time for sexual or sexist violence are being banned from France's top movie award ceremony "out of respect for the victims."

Veteran Franco-Polish filmmaker Roman Polanski has been ordered to stand trial in France over his alleged defamation of a British actress who accused him of sexual abuse, a source close to the case said onn Sept. 1

The Paris court order did not specify a trial date for Polanski, 89, who was charged in October last year.

An appeals court on July 13 ordered the unsealing of some documents in the criminal case against renowned director Roman Polanski, who has been a fugitive since pleading guilty to having sex with a 13-year-old girl decades ago, a California prosecutor announced.

Romanian film director and screenwriter Radu Jude will be honoured at the La Rochelle Cinema (FEMA)Festival, which will take place June 25-July 4. At the 49th edition of the event in France, Jude will be honoured alongside French filmmaker Xavier Beauvois, Lebanese filmmakers Joanna Hadjithomas and Khalil Joreige, and French composer Gabriel Yared.

The Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center's Park Your Cinema program continues at the Great Lawn with a screening of "Chinatown," a 1974 neo-noir mystery thriller directed by Roman Polanski. Starring Jack Nicholson, Faye Dunaway, John Huston and Perry Lopez, "Chinatown" is among the US Library of Congress' best films of all time. The SNFCC screening is free of charge and starts at 9 p.m.

A glittering array of A-listers swept up the red carpet as the Venice film festival opened in a flurry celebrity Aug. 28, but the 11-day celebration of cinema is battling scandal over the inclusion of director Roman Polanski. 

The 46th edition of FEST, under the slogan Come Closer, will take place from February 23 to March 4., featuring 116 premiers and ten cinematic classics.
