President says EU champion of democracy as victims of totalitarian regimes remembered

Ljubljana – President Borut Pahor underlined the role of the EU as the champion of democracy, human rights and the rule of law as he addressed a memorial ceremony to mark the European Day of Remembrance for Victims of all Totalitarian and Authoritarian Regimes on Tuesday. A minute of silence was held at the National Assembly.

Počivalšek to strive to exercise pre-emptive right to Sava

Ljubljana – Economy Minister Zdravko Počivalšek said he would strive for the state to exercise the pre-emptive right to a 43% stake in the tourism company Sava, which the private equity fund York has agreed to sell to Prestige, a company backed by a Hungarian fund. The final decision will be made after talks with the buyer and the relevant state institutions.

AIK to buy regional Sberbank branches, including Slovenian

Ljubljana, 16 June – Finance reported on Wednesday that the Serbian AIK Banka is close to signing a deal to buy all of Russian Sberbank’s operations in Southeast Europe, including those in Slovenia. A potential merger of Sberbank in Slovenia and Gorenjska Banka, which is owned by AIK, would create the third largest banking group in the country.

Supervisors of state asset custodian SHH approve asset management plan

Ljubljana – The supervisory board of state assets custodian, Slovenia Sovereign Holding (SSH), confirmed on Monday the annual asset management plan for next year. The document, which allegedly also lays down future steps in the formation of a special tourism holding, now needs the approval of the government.

Turkey offers $14 million bounty for 23 wanted ISIL militants

Turkey's Interior Ministry has updated its list of "wanted terrorists" to include 23 Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) militants following the jihadist organization's twin suicide bombing in the country's capital on Oct. 10, 2015. The government has offered rewards of more than 42 million Turkish liras (more than $14 million) for any information leading to the suspects' capture.
