Romania's Cirstea advances to US Open women's singles 2nd round

Romanian tennis player Sorana Cirstea progressed to the women's singles second round of the US Open tournament, the last Grand Slam of the year, after beating 29th -seeded Veronika Kudermetova of Russiah 7- 6 (5) 3-6 6-0 on Tuesday. Cirstea, 31, world number 39, prevailed over 24-year-old Kudermetova, world number 31, in about two hours (2 h 02 min).

Romania's Begu advances to Indian Wells 125K singles quarter-finals

Romanian tennis player Irina Begu on Thursday progressed to the singles quarter-finals of the 162,480-USD Oracle Challenger Series Indian Wells after defeating Kristie Ahn (USA) 6-3 6-3. Begu, 29, world number 104 prevailed in one hour and 39 minutes, at her first encounter with 27-year-old Ahn, world number 89.

Büyükakçay to take on Rogers at French Open

Turkish player Çağla Büyükakçay will take on Shelby Rogers at the French Open on May 31 after beating Croatia's Mirjana Lucic-Baroni in straight sets on May 28. 

The world's 155th-ranked player won 6-3, 6-3 against her 35-year-old rival, who is a full 133 spots ahead of her in the world rankings.

"I'll face another tough rival," Büyükakçay told Anadolu Agency after the win. 

Bulgaria's Sesil Karatancheva Defeated in First Round in Osprey

Bulgaria's female tennis player Sesil Karatancheva was defeated in the first round of the Wild Lexus Women's tournament, which is being held in Osprey, Florida.

Karatancheva lost to Shelby Rogers from the USA, who is seeded third in the tournament, with 1:6, 6:2, 4:6, daily Dnevnik reports.

Jovana Jaksic candidate for 'Rising Star' exhibition event

BELGRADE - Serbian tennis player Jovana Jaksic is among the candidates for playing in a WTA Finals Rising Star Exhibition, which will take place in Singapore from October 17 to 21.

Four tennis players will take part in the exhibition event, which will be held simultaneously with the closing WTA championship, two from the Asia/Pacific zone and two from the rest of the world.

Bojana Jovanovski through to Washington quarter-finals

WASHINGTON - Serbia's Bojana Jovanovski reached the quarter-finals of the Washington WTA tournament early Thursday by beating Sorana Cirstea of Romania 4-6, 7-5, 6-3.

In a bid to reach the semi-finals, Jovanovski will face Marina Erakovic of New Zealand, who beat Shelby Rogers of the United States 6-3, 6-4.
