Japan will send a warship and patrol planes to protect Japanese ships in the Middle East as the situation in the region, from which it sources nearly 90% of its crude oil imports, remains volatile, Japan's top government spokesman said on Dec. 27.

Japan on Dec. 26 executed a 40-year-old Chinese man convicted of murdering a family of four, in the country's first execution of a foreigner since the disclosure of details on sentences carried out began in 2007, the justice ministry said.
The man, Wei Wei, had committed the murders in mid-2003 with two accomplices who were also Chinese nationals, media reported.

US President Donald Trump will sign two trade agreements with Japan later on Monday, according to an official White House announcement.
Trump is scheduled to sign the pacts - a US-Japan trade agreement and a US-Japan digital trade agreement at 3:30 pm local time (10:30 pm Bulgarian time), the White House said.
