Police officer and soldier killed in southeastern town

One police officer was killed on Jan. 16 after being injured in clashes between security forces and outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) militants in the Sur district of Diyarbak?r, southeast Turkey.

The 35-year-old officer, Ali Bulduk, died at the Diyarbak?r Military Hospital and his body was sent to the southern province of Adana for his funeral. 

VICE News journalist released in Turkey after 131 days arrested

VICE News journalist and fixer Mohammed Rasool, who was arrested in southeastern Turkey 131 days ago, was finally released from jail on Jan. 5.

Lawyer Muhammed Ne?et Girasun had demanded Rasool's release, citing a lack of evidence for alleged links to the outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) and the longevity of his arrest.

Ayd?n Do?an cartoon exhibition in Adana

The cartoons that won the 32nd Ayd?n Do?an International Cartoon Competition will go on display in the southern province of Adana on Jan. 5. The exhibition at the 75'inci Y?l Art Gallery will remain open until Jan. 20. 

More than 780 artists from 66 different countries participated in the competition, in which the jury evaluated 2,289 works.

Diyarbak?r's Sur district under curfew for a month

The historical district of Sur in Diyarbak?r has now been subject to a curfew for the past month amid continuing clashes between the security forces and the outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) militants in the area.

Diyarbak?r's Sur district has turned into a zone of continued clashes with a curfew in effect since Dec. 2, apart from a break of only 17 hours on Dec. 10. 

Turkish police find bootleg alcohol hidden in pressure cookers

Turkish police have seized bootleg alcohol hidden in pressure cookers along with other illicit items found in a workplace in the southern province of Adana. 

A total of 10 people were detained in an early morning police operation on 22 separate locations in Adana on Dec. 22, Anadolu Agency reported. 

Armed men 'attack' rak? festival in southern Turkey

A group of armed men reportedly opened fire and chanted anti-alcohol slogans at an annual rak? festival in the southern province of Adana on Dec. 12.

The group fired into the air with shotguns and threatened festivalgoers, who escaped in panic from the streets of the Kazanc?lar Bazaar of Adana's Yüre?ir district, where the festival was being celebrated.
