Dutch journalist detained in Turkey slams house burglary as 'intimidation'

A Dutch journalist of Turkish descent who was briefly detained by Turkish police after tweeting critical remarks about the country's President Recep Tayyip Erdo?an has said her Amsterdam apartment has been broken into, denouncing what she described as "intimidation."

A Dutch journalist was detained on April 23 in the Ku?adas? district of the Aegean province of Ayd?n for allegedly insulting Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdo?an via her Twitter account. 

Police detained journalist Ebru Umar after she tweeted an extract from a recent piece she wrote for Dutch daily Metro critical of Erdo?an.

Bootleg alcohol kills one in western Turkey

One man has died and another was hospitalized after allegedly consuming bootleg alcohol in the Söke district of the western province of Ayd?n on March 8. 

Ertu?rul ?en, 58, died after he and a friend, 60-year-old Selahattin Serbest, met at the latter's grocery shop to drink rak?, an anise-based alcoholic drink popular in Turkey. 

Death toll in latest boat tragedy rises to 25

The number of migrants who drowned after a Greece-bound boat capsized off Turkey's Aegean coast on March 6 has risen to 25 and Turkish authorities have detained two human smugglers over the incident.

A Turkish official, who previously put the toll at 18, confirmed the latest figure, saying the coastguard had found seven more bodies, Agence France-Presse (AFP) reported on March 7.

Latest boat tragedy on Aegean kills at least 18

The latest migrant boat tragedy in the Aegean Sea has killed at least 18 off Turkey's west coast.

Some 15 other migrants, whose nationalities were not immediately available, were rescued by the Turkish Coast Guard on March 6 after a Greece-bound boat carrying dozens of migrants capsized off Didim, a district in the Aegean province of Ayd?n, killing at least 18.

Ancient city Magnesia in western Turkey submerged once again

The ancient city of Magnesia, where excavations have been ongoing for 30 years, remains underwater after rainfall over the weekend submerged parts of the excavated site. 

Located in the western province of Ayd?n's Germencik district, the 3rd century B.C. ancient city has turned into a lake with due to heavy rainfall and groundwater in the surrounding area. 

Two suspected suicide bombers caught in Turkey's west

Police detained two suspected suicide bombers in the Aegean province of Ayd?n at a bus terminal on Feb. 2.

The suspects were caught while they were about to head to the neighboring ?zmir province from the Söke bus terminal.

A kalashnikov rifle, a hand grenade, bombing material, and ammunition were also seized in the luggage of the two suspects.
