Country breaks temperature record as wildfires continue

As extreme temperatures continue to spiral globally, heatwaves and wildfires have wreaked havoc throughout several parts of Türkiye, especially in the Central Anatolian province of Eskişehir, where mercury has shot up to a whopping 49.5 degrees, breaking the country's all-time heat record, the environment minister has informed.

More than 5,200 people killed in traffic accidents: Official data

 

In the road network of Türkiye, a total of 5,229 people lost their lives in more than 197,000 traffic accidents that occurred in 2022, the Turkish Statistical Institute has announced.

The data of the institute released on May 25 showed that as a result of nearly 197,250 accidents, 5,229 people died, while more than 288,500 others got injured last year.

Heavy snowfall blankets Turkey’s east in mid-April

Turkey's eastern provinces have been hit by heavy snowfalls in the middle of April, with the snow depth reaching some 20 centimeters in the center of Kars, a province bordering Armenia.

"People swim at the Aegean coasts, we are shoveling snow here in April," Güven Öztürk, a resident of Kars, told Demirören News Agency on April 13.

MHP leader criticizes opposition lawmaker for insulting family of martyr

Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) Chair Devlet Bahçeli has criticized İYİ (Good) Party lawmaker Lütfü Türkkan for swearing at a protestor in the eastern province of Bingöl.

"To swear at the sister of a martyr is indecent, dishonest, and the language of the enemy," Bahçeli said on Nov. 9 at his party's parliamentary group meeting, without naming Türkkan.

İYİ (Good) Party Group Deputy Chair Lütfü Türkkan on Nov. 6 resigned from his post at the party after he was accused of swearing at a protester in eastern province of Bingöl.

Video footage posted on social media showed Türkkan swearing at a relative of a person killed by the terror group PKK protesting İYİ Party leader Meral Akşener.

Magnitude 5.2 quake shakes eastern Turkey

A magnitude-5.2 earthquake struck Turkey's eastern province of Bingöl on June 25, according to the country's disaster agency.

The Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) said the quake struck the Kiğı district at 9.28 p.m. local time (1828GMT).

It occurred at a depth of 15.51 kilometers (9.63 miles) below the surface, it said.
