An Italian researcher believes he has identified the location of Plato's burial place in Athens by analyzing papyri from Herculaneum.

According to the research, led by the Italian papyrologist Graziano Ranocchia of the University of Pisa, Plato is buried in a in a private area in a garden in the Academy, near a sacred shrine to the Muses.

A black-walled banqueting hall decorated with scenes from Greek mythology, where ancient Romans feasted by candlelight, has been unearthed in Pompeii, the archaeological park said on April 11.

The exceptionally well-preserved frescoes show the god Apollo attempting to seduce Trojan priestess Cassandra, and Helen of Troy meeting Paris, an encounter which would lead to war.

Quarantine is now mandatory in the southern Italian regions of Puglia and Campania for travelers returning from Greece, Spain and Malta, as part of measures to curb the spread of the coronavirus, according to Italian media reports on Wednesday. 

Financial police officers in Italy have arrested the president and CEO of the Bank for Economic Development in the Sicilian city of Catania. They have been charged with willful bankruptcy and other financial crimes.

In the southern part of Italy there was a tornado. It affected the city of Caserta in the Campania region. The wind turned a truck, pulled out trees and destroyed roofs.

Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi suffered a setback in local elections on May 31, with a weaker-than-expected showing by his centre-left bloc and a marked rise in support for the right-wing Northern League and the anti-establishment 5-Star Movement. 

Italians voted May 31 in regional elections seen as a key measure of the fading fortunes of ex-premier Silvio Berlusconi and an important test for centre-left Prime Minister Matteo Renzi.
