Police union files suit over January 10 armed attack on riot squad

The union representing Athens police officers on Wednesday filed suit against the administration of the Greek Police (ELAS) for putting officers' lives at risk.

The suit pertains to a gun attack on January 10 against a riot police unit posted outside the offices of the PASOK party in the downtown district of Exarchia, in which one policeman was injured.

Speaking to anchor Antonis Srioter of Alpha TV’s nightly news bulletin, the leader of Greece’s major opposition New Democracy (ND) party, Kyriakos Mitsotakis vowed to repeal the government’s “illegal procedures” to permanently appoint seasonal contracted employees in the public sector.

Anarchists attack police in Exarchia

A group of unidentified individuals attacked an anti-riot police unit in the district of Exarchia, Athens in the early hours of Monday. The group hurled petrol bombs against the police officers and parked vehicles on the corner of Kallidromiou and Ikonomou street. The police officers were on routine patrol in the area at the time of the attack. There have been no reports of injuries.

Two Athens metro stations to close for Grigoropoulos rally

Police in Athens on Tuesday ordered the closure of two central metro stations amid concerns of violence at a rally marking the eighth anniversary since the police killing of teenager Alexis Grigoropoulos.

The Panepistimio metro station at Athens University will close at 3 p.m. and Syntagma at 4 p.m., and will not serve commuters until police give the all-clear.

Protesters torch trolley bus, clash with police in Athens

Around 40 hooded anti-establishment protesters threw petrol bombs and stones at riot police in central Athens on Saturday, setting fire to a trolley bus.

Police fired teargas to try and control the crowd outside Athens Polytechnic University, near the central Exarchia district, a Bohemian quarter popular with artists and left-wing intellectuals.

Varoufakis attacked by anarchists while dining in Athens

Greek Finance Minister Yanis Varoufakis has said he and his wife came under attack by anarchists while dining in a central Athens restaurant.

In a statement Wednesday, Varoufakis said he and his wife were in the Exarchia district, a neighborhood popular with extreme leftists and anarchists, Tuesday night when a group barged into the restaurant.
