Car accident kills chief public prosecutor in Turkey's west

A chief public prosecutor and his driver were killed in a car accident in the Merkezefendi district of the western province of Denizli on May 10. 

Denizli Chief Public Prosecutor Mustafa Alper, 48, and his driver Muzaffer Akşehirli were killed when a truck laden with excavations crashed into their car on a highway.

10 percent rise in weapons used by civilians in Turkey in first three months of 2017

The number of weapons used by civilians in Turkey rose by 10 percent in the first three months of 2017, according to statistics released by the Interior Ministry. 

The total number of licensed weapons used by civilians reached 338,052 with the increase, the ministry said upon a parliamentary question regarding individual arming by independent lawmaker Aylin Nazlıaka. 

Minister refutes reports on same-sex siblings policy for foster families in Turkey

Family and Social Policies Minister Fatma Betül Sayan Kaya refuted on May 4 reports that decisions on granting custody of children to foster parents was being affected by the gender of the children.

Controversy had been stirred over reports that local officials in the Aegean province of İzmir were not giving away girls to parents who already have sons. 

'Cemetery of the nameless' established in Turkey's west for Syrians who died en route to Greece

A "cemetery of the nameless" has been established near the coast in the western Turkish province of İzmir for Syrians who died while trying to cross over to Greece. 

The newly founded Doğançay Cemetery hosts dozens of graves bearing numbers rather than names, with an imam praying for the unidentified bodies during their burial.
