As the threat of an impending earthquake of magnitude 7 or above looms over Istanbul and with authorities expediting works to make the city earthquake resistant, the iconic Galata Bridge in Istanbul has been closed to traffic for about 40 days to conduct structural strengthening works.

The 100-year-old building of Beyazıt Han in Istanbul's Karaköy district has collapsed, a place that carried significant historical importance for being a hub for tailors in the past.

Partial collapses occurred in the historic abandoned building on Kemeraltı Street in the morning hours of April 6. Upon the incident, police and fire brigade teams were dispatched to the scene.

Restaurants and offices inside the Galata Tower will be evacuated and the historical tower will be turned into a museum, Turkey's culture and tourism minister Mehmet Nuri Ersoy announced on June 8. 

New cruise ship port, Galataport, which is being developed jointly by Doğuş Group and Bilgili Holding in Istanbul's Karaköy district along 1,200 meters of coastline, will welcome its first cruise ship in April 2020.

A new floating pier in Istanbul's Karaköy district was installed in the early hours of May 24, due to go into service later this month after 10 years closed.

A curated flea/designer market is set to open its doors in Karaköy under the theme ?Spring? on May 2 and 3. Souq Karaköy, featuring selections from much sought after pioneering designers and brands, is a weekly pop-up bazaar that acts as a hub allowing creative types to gather in Istanbul.
