Crackdown on spread of chairs and tables in public spaces

Seeking to send a message to proprietors encroaching on public space with illegally placed chairs and tables, the Municipality of Athens has already singled out 10 catering establishments that have repeatedly failed to comply with the rules and is initiating procedures for their temporary closure for a period of 1-5 days, implementing recently passed relevant legislation.

Nine detained over torched cars in central Athens

Nine people were detained on Thursday following a fourth day in a row of arson attacks on cars in central Athens.

According to the police and fire service, four cars were torched at 3.40 a.m. on Karachristou Street, in the district of Kolonaki, three of which were completely destroyed and the fourth was seriously damaged.

Firemen were called in to put out the blaze.

The tragicomic backlash sparked by the unfortunate plan to rename Athens' Evangelismos metro station (which serves the hospital of the same name in the downtown Kolonaki district) Pavlos Bakoyannis, after the late conservative politician who was gunned down in the area 30 years ago by the November 17 terrorist group, was not all bad.

Explosive device in Kolonaki made up of containers with flammable liquid

A homemade explosive mechanism that blew up outside Aghios Dionysios church in the upscale Athenian district of Kolonaki on Thursday morning was made up of two containers with flammable liquid, wires and a clock, state-run news agency ANA-MPA reported.

Police sources cited by the news agency said the explosion, which injured a policeman and a church employee, was small.

Explosive device goes off outside church in central Athens; officer injured

A homemade explosive mechanism blew up outside Aghios Dionysios church in the upscale Athenian district of Kolonaki on Thursday morning injuring a policeman, Greek media reported.

The device was placed inside a metallic box discovered by a church employee who notified police, according to the head of the police's special guards union, Stavros Mavroidakos.
