Amid a rapid escalation in flu cases, numerous regions in Bulgaria are grappling with a growing epidemic, prompting authorities to implement decisive measures to contain its spread. The surging number of flu incidents has resulted in the suspension of classes in various areas, impacting students and educational institutions alike.

In anticipation of the International Festival of Masquerade Games "Surva," the town of Pernik has declared January 26 a non-school day, setting the stage for a vibrant celebration. The festival, renowned for its colorful and spirited masquerade parades, promises an extraordinary experience for participants and spectators alike.

In a rather unique turn of events following Sunday's local election runoff in Bulgaria, six villages across the country failed to elect a mayor in the second round, leading to new partial local elections. Among these villages is Cherna Gora in the Pernik district, where a perfect tie in votes occurred, leaving the decision to the president to schedule new elections.

A fire blazed over the market in the center of Pernik in minutes last evening. No one was injured, but there was material damage.

According to the mayor of Pernik Stanislav Vladimirov, about 7-8 stalls burned down.

"Pernik municipality will try to help the affected traders as far as the law allows," Vladimirov told.

Plovdiv mayor Zdravko Dimitrov has banned the sale, serving and consumption of alcohol in public catering establishments and other public places on April 4, the day of Bulgaria's parliamentary elections.

The ban will be in effect from 6am until 9pm on Sunday. Voting in Bulgaria's parliamentary elections is scheduled to end at 8pm.

Bulgaria's Minister of Environment and Water, Neno Dimov, on January 10 was accused of deliberate mismanagement. He remains in custody for 72 hours. The Prosecutor's Office will seek for remand.
