Ex-Catalan leader Carles Puigdemont detained in Sardinia

Former Catalan leader Carles Puigdemont, who fled Spain after a failed secession bid for the northeastern region in 2017, was detained on Sept. 23 in Sardinia, Italy, his lawyer said.

Puigdemont, who lives in Belgium and now holds a seat in the European Parliament, has been fighting extradition to Spain, which accused him and other Catalan independence leaders of sedition.

Sexagenarian marathon runner prepares for 300-kilometer race

Turkey's first female ultramarathon runner, Bakiye Duran, 62, is set to run in the Ultra Trail du Mont-Blanc (UTMB) that will be held Aug. 23.

Duran will run in the 300-kilometer UTMB, first held in 2003. The race will cover France, Italy and Switzerland and competitors will circle Mont Blanc massif in the Alps.

Italy Ravaged by Wildfires, Record Heat in Sicily

High temperatures and dry weather assisted the spread of wildfires in Southern Europe with Italy being one of the worst hit. The wildfires advanced as far as the suburbs of the Italian capital Rome, Reuters elaborated. Local residents were evacuated from small communities around 40 km east of the ancient city.

20.000 hectares of forest have already been destroyed, and 1.500 people have been evacuated.
7.500 people, helicopters and "Canadian" planes were mobilized to put out the fire. During the night, tourists who spent their summers in the port of Porto Alabe were evacuated. Fires are raging near 13 cities, and firefighters' efforts are hampered by strong and hot winds.

Reminder to Travelers: Italy Closes down for Easter, See What Restrictions Are in Red Zones

The last weekend of freedom ends before the closures that will accompany Italy until Easter Monday: from today 48 million Italians from 10 regions plus the Province of Trento are in the red zone to ease coronavirus infections.

Restrictions broadly unchanged as state of epidemic extended by a month

Brdo pri Kranju – The government has extended the majority of coronavirus restrictions by another week as it prolonged the state of the epidemic by another thirty days as part of its weekly review of measures on Wednesday.

“The current epidemic situation … requires a new, temporally limited declaration of the epidemic across the entire territory of Slovenia,” the government said.
