Polling day approaches after campaign full of twists and turns
After a campaign that saw many twists and turns, Slovenians will head to the polls on Sunday to cast their vote in the presidential election although the country’s fifth president is not expected to be elected until the run-off on 13 November.
SD without own presidential candidate
Ljubljana – The coalition Social Democrats (SD) will not field their own candidate in the 23 October presidential election and the party will also not endorse any of the candidates running, the SD presidency decided on Monday. SD leader Tanja Fajon said the party might decide to endorse a candidate in a potential run-off.

Higher Court upholds SD’s EUR 10,000 libel claim against Janša
Ljubljana – The ruling ordering opposition Democrats (SDS) head Janez Janša to pay EUR 10,000 in damages and apologise to the coalition Social Democrats (SD) for claiming the party operated from a “stolen Jewish villa” has become final.

SD decides to run with own presidential candidate
Ljubljana – The presidency of the junior coalition Social Democrats (SD) decided on Monday that the party will put forward its own candidate for the upcoming presidential election. The internal candidacy procedure will remain open until 15 July.

Left leadership gets vote of confidence, mandate for coalition talks
Ljubljana – The council of the Left on Friday endorsed the party’s executive committee, headed by coordinator Luka Mesec, after the committee put their mandate for a vote of confidence. The party leadership has been given the mandate for talks with the Freedom Movement to enter a coalition headed by Robert Golob.
Golob to informally meet Pahor, coalition talks to start Tuesday
Ljubljana/Koper – Robert Golob, the head of the Freedom Movement party that has convincingly won Sunday’s general election, is expected to meet President Borut Pahor informally on Tuesday as the most likely candidate for the prime minister-designate. Talks with the Social Democrats (SD) and Left on forming a new coalition are also expected tomorrow.
Parsifal poll has SDS in lead
Ljubljana – The final pre-election poll by pollster Parisfal brought only minor changes compared to a week ago, still putting the Democrats (SDS) ahead of the Freedom Movement and the SocDems. New Slovenia (NSi), the Left and Connecting Slovenia are projected to make it to parliament too, while the LMŠ, SAB, Resni.ca, Our Land, SNS and DeSUS are not.
