Venice's new measures to curb day visitors
Day-trippers to the fabled canal city of Venice who fail to pay 5 euros ($5.43) to enter the lagoon city's historic center during a time-limited pilot program launching later this month will face fines starting at 10 times the entrance fee, officials said on March 4.

A stretch of Venice's Grand Canal turned bright green on May 28, prompting police to investigate amid speculation about a stunt by environmentalists.

Hurricane winds, fierce storms leave several dead in France, Italy
Violent thunderstorms and hurricane-force winds left at least eight dead on Aug. 18 in France and Italy, uprooting trees in Tuscany and on the French island of Corsica and ripping away brick shards from St. Mark's famed bell tower in Venice. Over 100 boats in the Mediterranean Sea called for emergency help, authorities said.
