VELIKI CRLJENI - The fire in the thermal power plant Kolubara within the Nikola Tesla thermal power complex has been extinguished in flood-hit Obrenovac and nobody was injured, Serbian Minister of Energy and Mining Aleksandar Antic said.

OBRENOVAC - Serbian Prime Minister Aleksandar Vucic on Friday visited the Belgrade municipality of Obrenovac, the hardest hit by the floods in Serbia.

"The situation is catastrophic and the entire town will have to be evacuated," Vucic said after inspecting the situation from a boat. Obrenovac was flooded at dawn after embankments caved in.

BELGRADE - Severe weather conditions, torrential rain and floods left 135,000 homes across Serbia without power, and areas in the most difficult situation are Lazarevac, Obrenovac, Valjevo, Paracin and Smederevska Palanka, the Serbian electric power company EPS released.

Prime minister: Whole town may have to be evacuated

BELGRADE -- PM Aleksandar Vučić was in the Belgrade municipality of Obrenovac on Friday where he said that the whole flood-stricken town will have to be evacuated.

Obrenovac is currently the most endangered location in Serbia, which has been affected by floods caused by record rainfall this week.

BELGRADE - More than 1,000 members of the Serbian Armed Forces (VS) utilizing combat and motorized equipment are taking part in operations to rescue the country's flood-endangered population, Serbian Defense Minister Branislav Gasic said Friday.

BELGRADE - The Serbian Orthodox Church (SPC) will donate RSD 10 million as aid for the areas worst hit by the floods and establish a special fund for donations to help repair the damage, Bishop of Backa Irinej has said.

The SPC assembly was informed on Friday about the extent of the disaster that has hit Serbia, Republika Srpska and the entire region, he stated.

OBRENOVAC - Serbian President Tomislav Nikolic said on Thursday that the authorities would do all they can to save every human life which is top priority at this point, while the damage and repairs would be discussed only once the natural disaster is over.

BELGRADE - The Serbian government declared a state of emergency due to flashing floods caused by heavy rain throughout the country on Thursday.

The decision was made at the request by the Republic Emergency Management Headquarters, who said this is the biggest natural disaster caused by rain in Serbia's history.

BELGRADE - The 3rd European Film Festival will take place at Dom Omladine in Belgrade May 16-21, the organizers announced.

The festival, whose theme is “In-Between-Land”, will be opened by Head of the EU Delegation to Serbia Michael Davenport.
